I’ll Just Have To Have The Surgery…..

I have heard this everyday for the past 34 years from patients. “Doc, you are my last resort before I have the surgery on my __________.” You can fill in the blank. The problem here is that surgery for many folks is NOT a permanent fix for their problem. This is an enormous misconception. Of course there are times where surgery is a must, but for many it is not a guaranteed result. In fact many patients may end up worse then when they started. In particular, patients who have an operation for “pain” is oftentimes disastrous. Pain is a multifaceted problem that generally cannot be “removed” with a scalpel.

Each and every year, thousands of patients with #osteoarthritis have #arthroscopic #knee operations. Unfortunately, it is not more effective than placebo surgery. Studies show it may not be worth having this surgery performed. Practice guidelines issued by experts show that the danger may outweigh the reward. These guidelines make a “strong recommendation against the use of arthroscopy in nearly all patients with degenerative knee disease.”

A common surgery is for #shoulder-impingement syndrome. In this case arthroscopic surgery is frequently recommended. However, in a 2018 research study, it was found that the surgery worked no better than “sham” surgery. In a two year follow-up with the same patients, they found the sham surgery had similar improvements as the real surgery.

Moving on the spine surgery a growing body of research concludes that spinal fusion and laminectomy for low back pain, #vertebroplasty for spinal compression fractures, and other surgeries for back pain have only modest advantages over non-surgical treatment. So if good outcomes can be a hit or a miss, why do people believe that surgery is the answer?

So what is the answer if surgery is not? Well, when it comes to treating pain, as mentioned earlier, treatment is generally multifaceted. It can include many types of treatments such as #MLS Robotic Laser, acupuncture, #prolozone injections, physical therapy, various medications, #stem-cell, #PRP, #exosomes, etc. You owe it to yourself to consider ALL non-surgical options prior to considering any surgery. You should consult with many health care practitioners for opinions. There are always new breakthroughs in pain treatment. Please do not be misled into thinking surgery is a definitive treatment for pain.

Health Canada Approves Phase 1 Study of Vaporized Cannabinoid-derived Treatment PPP001 for Chronic Pain: Fibromyalgia News Today

Tetra BioPharma has announced that the Therapeutic Drug Directorate at Health Canada has issued a “No objection letter” in approving a Phase 1 study to test a vaporized version of PPP001 for the treatment of #chronic-pain, the main feature of #fibromyalgia.

The study will investigate the pharmacokinetics — the time the body takes to absorb, distribute, and excrete the substance — and the safety of the vaporized medicine.

PPP001 is a #cannabinoid-based product being tested in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT03339622), currently recruiting, for its efficacy in relieving pain in people with advanced cancer.

The use of cannabinoids has grown exponentially for the treatment of a variety of health concerns. In my practice we have used full spectrum CBD products for several years with excellent results with fibromyalgia patients, cancer patients, or any chronic pain condition. CBD not only impacts the pain but positively affects mood, insomnia, and anxiety. CBD is well tolerated, and these products do not interfere with other medications. CBD can be vaporized, taken orally, applied topically or can be applied in combination.

Regenerative Medicine Advancements

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a medical conference on regenerative medicine last week. We will be offering these new services for orthopedic conditions as well as aesthetic and wellness applications. In addition to stem-cell treatment, there are advances in the regenerative medicine which enhance the results beyond the typical stem cell injections. For example, with new protocols knee pain patients are experiencing upwards of 90% improvement.

An Investigation Into The Efficacy Of Ozone In Knee Arthritis

Prolozone is derived from the word ozone and the Latin word “proli” which means to regenerate or re-build. It literally means re-building tissues with ozone and is routinely performed in my practice.

This study reviewed the research looking into the use of ozone injections with patients with mild to moderate knee arthritis. The researchers concluded that, “ozone could be recommended as an efficient non-surgical treatment, durable for at least 3–6 months, in mild or moderate knee OA management.”

In summary, Prolozone is a non-surgical injection based treatment that in many cases resolves or improves chronic knee pain with arthritis. Further anecdotal evidence suggests that ozone can regenerate damaged tissues.

Tai Chi Has Similar Efficacy To Aerobic Exercise for Fibromyalgia: Pain Medicine News

When it comes to the nonpharmacologic management of pain for fibromyalgia, classic yang-style tai chi is more effective than standard aerobic exercise, according to the results of a randomized controlled trial.

“A longer duration of tai chi also had more benefit than a shorter duration,” said principal investigator Chenchen Wang, MD, the director of the Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at Tufts Medical Center, in Boston.

Common Painkiller Is Causing Many Heart Attacks: Mercola.com

As if it isn’t bad enough that we have created legions of narcotic addicts who oftentimes don’t even remember how they got addicted to opioid medications in the first place, now further research shows that non-steroidal pain medications can increase the risk of heart attack. So, if they won’t burn a hole in your belly- they might kill you instead. In our practice we use natural herbal medicines to reduce pain and inflammation, in addition we use natural treatments which stimulate healing with great results. Here is a brief intro to the article:

“Nearly 25 million American adults suffer from pain on a daily basis and 23 million report experiencing severe pain. In fact, pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined and is cited as the most common reason Americans access health care.

Pain is a major contributor to health care costs and a leading cause of disability. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates at least half adult population in the world experienced at least one headache in the past year.

In an effort to alleviate pain, many turn to using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)often prescribed after an injury, to treat menstrual cramps and to reduce fever or headache. In the U.S., nearly 70 million prescriptions are written and 30 billion doses are consumed when over-the-counter (OTC) NSAIDs are included.

Although they may appear innocuous as they are sold in local convenience stores, by conservative estimates, over 105,000 people are hospitalized every year from side effects of these drugs and over 16,000 died. Long-term side effects from NSAIDs are varied, but research demonstrates short-term use significantly increases your risk of heart attack.”
